Connect Claude (or ChatGPT) to Mylo
Step-by-step setup for Mylo's AI-assistant connector: add it to Claude as a custom connector, see exactly what the assistant can and can't do, understand the permission model, and revoke access anytime.
Mylo ships a remote MCP connector: a secure endpoint that lets an AI assistant search your receipts, transactions, and expenses (and, with your permission, create expenses and expense reports for you). This guide walks through connecting it, what the assistant actually gets, and how to take access away again.
It works with Claude (web, desktop, and mobile apps) via custom connectors, and with other MCP-compatible assistants, including ChatGPT where custom connectors are available on your plan. Claude is the primary walkthrough below.
Before you start
- A Mylo account (sign in on the web app first).
- A Claude plan that supports custom connectors. On Claude Team/Enterprise, an owner adds the connector once under Organization settings.
Connect Claude, step by step
- In Mylo, open Settings → AI assistants.
- Your personal connector URL is shown at the top. Tap Claude; Mylo copies the URL to your clipboard and opens Claude's connectors page.
- In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector and paste the URL.
- Claude sends you to sign in to Mylo: your own account, in your own browser session. Mylo never shares a password with the assistant; the connection uses standard OAuth.
- Mylo shows a consent screen listing exactly what the connection will be able to do (search and read your receipts, expenses, and reports; and, if write access is requested, create expenses and reports on your behalf). Click Allow.
That's it. Start a chat and try: "Find my receipts from last week" or "Which vendors did I spend the most with this quarter?"
ChatGPT and other assistants
The same connector URL works in any assistant that supports remote MCP connectors. In ChatGPT (available on paid plans), look under Settings → Connectors, enable developer mode if your plan requires it, and add a custom connector with the URL from Mylo's Settings → AI assistants page. The sign-in and consent flow is identical. We can't document every assistant's menus here; if yours supports custom MCP connectors, point it at your Mylo connector URL and approve the connection.
What the assistant can do
The connector exposes a fixed set of tools, all scoped to your account.
Read (search and answer):
| Tool | What it does | |------|--------------| | search_receipts | Find receipts by free text and filters: date range, merchants, amount range, sender email/domain, currency, travel locations. | | get_receipt | Full detail on one receipt: line items, totals, travel info. | | list_receipt_vendors | Spend aggregated by merchant (count + total), optionally within a date range. | | search_transactions | Search your linked bank/card transactions by text, dates, amounts, merchant, category, status, including whether each already became an expense. | | list_expenses / get_expense | Your expenses, filterable by status, dates, category, or report. | | list_categories | Your expense category tree. | | list_expense_reports / get_expense_report | Your reports and their contents, with a computed total. | | list_policies | The spending-policy documents that apply to you. |
Write (act on your behalf), only if the connection was granted write access:
| Tool | What it does | |------|--------------| | create_expense_report | Create a report (e.g. a trip) to collect expenses. | | create_expenses_from_receipts | Turn a set of receipts into draft expenses, optionally attached to a report. | | create_expense | Create a single draft expense (manual entry). | | create_mileage_expense | Create a distance-based expense; the amount is always computed server-side from your organisation's mileage rate. | | create_policy / update_policy / delete_policy | Manage the spending-policy documents Mylo checks new expenses against (org/role policies require owner or admin rights). |
Note what's not there: the assistant can't submit expenses for approval, approve or deny anything, export to QuickBooks, or delete expenses. Every expense it creates is a draft that you review and submit in the app.
Permissions and security
- Your account, your data only. Every tool call runs scoped to your user and your connected accounts. The connector has no way to reach another user's data.
- Read and write are separate scopes. A read-only connection can search and answer; every write tool refuses to run on it.
- Writes are confirmed and land as drafts. Claude asks you before running a tool that changes data. Even approved writes only create drafts; the submit/approve flow stays in the app, with you.
- Consent up front, revocation always on. You see what a connection can do before you allow it, and every request re-checks that the connection is still active; revoking cuts access immediately.
- Organisation data is a separate, explicit choice. If you're an org owner or admin, the consent screen also offers connecting organisation data instead of your personal data: a read-only view of members' submitted and approved expenses, the org's invoices, and the member roster, never anyone's personal receipts, private bank accounts, or out-of-pocket drafts. An org-level setting (corporate data sharing) can widen that view to corporate-paid expenses in any status and corporate bank feeds; it's off unless your org turns it on.
- Accountants have their own mode. A connected accountant can authorize a connector over their client organisations, scoped to the clients they already have access to in Mylo, and clearly labelled as acting on the client's behalf.
Revoking access
- In Mylo, open Settings → AI assistants.
- Find the connection in the list and tap Disconnect.
Access ends immediately; the assistant's tokens stop working on the next request. You can reconnect anytime by running the setup again.
Good to know
- One connection per assistant. Connect Claude and ChatGPT separately; each shows up as its own row in Settings → AI assistants, and each can be revoked on its own.
- Drafts behave like your drafts. Anything the assistant creates appears in Mylo exactly as if you'd created it: private until you submit, editable, deletable.
- Currencies aren't converted. Totals the assistant computes are per-currency; it's told not to sum across currencies, so ask per currency if you spend in several.
