Receipts
How do I scan a receipt with Mylo?
By the Mylo team · Last updated July 1, 2026
Short answer
Tap Scan in the Mylo app, point your camera at the receipt, and tap the shutter. Mylo reads it with AI in the background and turns it into a draft expense, so you never retype a receipt.
Scanning is the fastest way to get a paper receipt into Mylo, and it lives right in the bottom navigation on iPhone, Android and the web. The point of putting it there is speed: you can capture a receipt the moment it lands in your hand, before it gets lost or fades. Each shot goes into a live upload queue, so you keep shooting instead of waiting on any one photo.
The reason capture feels instant is that the AI does its work in the background. Once a photo is in the queue, Mylo pulls out the merchant, date, time, currency, total, tax, line items, payment method and card last-4, then classifies the type (purchase, return, subscription, or not-a-receipt). All of that becomes a draft expense you can open, check and submit, without retyping anything from the slip.
If the receipt already exists as a file, you do not need to photograph a screen. You can upload a saved photo, a screenshot or a PDF instead, and it runs through the exact same parser. That makes Scan and upload a single catch-all for anything you can point a camera at or already have saved.
How it works in Mylo
- Scanning lives in the bottom navigation and works on iPhone, Android and the web.
- Each photo joins a live upload queue and is read in the background, so you can keep shooting without waiting.
- The AI pulls out merchant, date, time, currency, total, tax, line items, payment method and card last-4.
- It also tags a type: purchase, return, subscription or not-a-receipt, so odd items are flagged early.
- A draft expense is created automatically from the read, ready for you to review.
- Already have the file? Upload a saved photo, screenshot or PDF instead of taking a new photo.
Best practices
- Shoot in decent light and get all four corners in frame for the cleanest read.
- Snap the whole stack in one session; uploads keep running even if you switch tabs.
- Open a finished draft to confirm the category and payment method before you submit.
